The Whiteboard is a new series on the SQLBI YouTube channel where I use a whiteboard to describe abstract DAX and Tabular concepts in a more interactive way.
I usually represent these concepts by drawing on a whiteboard in our classroom courses. Yet, I don’t know whether it is practical to use this technique in a recorded video because there is no possible interaction with the viewers. The point of this series is to test whether drawing on an electronic whiteboard can help describe abstract concepts in a more concrete and visual way.
The goal of the series is to present several short videos, each for a separate concept that is not “visible” by just looking at the DAX code. This series is not a replacement for existing training material and should be seen as an integration and extension of our books, articles, and video courses.
Here is the list of topics covered in The Whiteboard series:
- Filter Context
- Row Context
- Context Transition
- Expanded Table
- Variables
- Formula Engine
- Storage Engine (VertiPaq)
- One-to-many relationships
- Invalid relationships
- Regular and limited relationships

- Many-to-many relationship
The first video about the filter context is already available.
Subsequent videos will be released every two weeks.
