What's happened in the last two weeks, with our comments:
• Microsoft Data Insights Summit 2017 | The Microsoft Data Insights Summit in Seattle (June 12-13, 2017) will be the biggest event for Power BI, and it is already sold-out. We expect many announcements at the conference, including the winner of the |
Data Analytics Challenge. Starting from one of three possible datasets, you can create the best Power BI report. One category is about data preparation, so you have a choice even if you are not a data visualization hero.
• Comparing Power BI and Tableau licensing models Comparing licensing model and costs is never an easy task. The two-parts comparison of Power BI and Tableau licensing (Part 1, Part 2) shows that Tableau is more expensive in most of the scenarios. Licensing is always more complicated than necessary.
• Power BI Report Server If you want Power BI on premises you need Power BI Report Server, which is now in preview. You can get this product with Power BI Premium without getting the full SQL Server Enterprise license. Licensing complexity again, yes.
• New custom visuals from ZoomCharts Microsoft announced new custom visuals from ZoomCharts with a free version available in the Office Store, and a more complete and customizable version that you can purchase separately. Is there a future for paid custom visuals? In this case, the licensing price is only for developers and not for viewers. The industry is looking for a sustainable economic model.
• Azure Analysis Services supports compatibility level 1400 | You do not have to wait for Analysis Services 2017 to release in production new features such as transformations in M (like Power Query/Power BI), object-level security, ragged hierarchies, and customized detail rows. The “cloud first” strategy is for real. |
