Introducing DAX Video Course

This is an introductory video course about the DAX language. DAX is the native language of Power BI, Power Pivot for Excel, and SSAS Tabular models in Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. The training is aimed at users of Power BI, Power Pivot for Excel, and at Analysis Services developers that want to move the first steps with DAX.

The goal is to teach the DAX language using Power BI for all the examples. You can download the initial Power BI Desktop file used in the demos and repeat all the steps shown in the videos. The same concepts can be used also on Power Pivot and on Analysis Services Tabular. The course is made of 150 minutes of lectures. You can watch the videos at anytime and the system will keep track of your advances. Within the course you can download the slides and the initial Power BI file used in the demos.

Very informative. I have some Power BI hours under my belt, so the speed of the video lectures was not much of an issue for me, however, for those who have less experience, I can imagine them having to watch certain lectures multiple times, or at a minimum, pause and start again, which might discourage some individuals from completing the course.

Concepts are explain technically and how they behave, how using different things for example sumx or calculate can result into similar calculation, these things are really useful to know. In addition to this, I believe putting a use case or scenario showing when one will use one technique against other will of great use. I am learning all behavior of different technique but there is only question in my mind why i am learning different ways of calculating same things, only if there are examples which showing when one thing will be use against other will be of great use. I am happy discuss things in more details.

    • This is an introductory course which goal is to introduce the basic concepts of the DAX language. A more complete course is the Mastering DAX, which has the same approach going deeper in each topic. If you are more interested in learning practical solutions to common patterns, we have DAX Patterns, where you can find many practical examples without the explanation of how DAX works behind.

These are amazing videos. Thank y

Very useful information for beginners, this course is unique because it highlights with due focus some of the most important information in all of DAX, specifically regarding evaluation contexts.

Very good! I've been stumbling around in Dax/PowerBI and watching this course explained some of the rules behind things that I had inferred. Understanding the rules (especially filters context and how calculate modifies the context) may have gotten me past the road block I have been beating my head against! Thank you!

  • Dayo Solaru (Apr 25, 2019)

    Very well explained

  • José Daniel Zerpa Avila (Apr 20, 2019)

Outstanding classes. Thanks your clarify some concepts that were impossible for me to understand.

  • Deepak Chauhan (Apr 20, 2019)

Wow!! Is it possible to get the sample dataset used in the exercises? So we can practise side by side on each topic.

    • There is an initial section where you can download the file used for the examples. This course does not have exercises, they are included in the full Mastering DAX video course.

This is an excellent primer for the Mastering Dax course. Also, the ability to use Dax within PowerBI opens a vast array of tools for the data analyst. Understanding evaluation contexts is key to unlocking the power of PowerBI.

Excellent course. Baby step video to learn DAX. After months of completed, time on time I come over when I want to refresh knowledge and solve issues on my models/report. Marco and Alberto are highly professional and "maestros.

  • ERIC SCOPINHO (Apr 18, 2019)

Amazing course. Very clear and concise but at the same time covered a lot for an introductory course. The visual aids and instructor are great! By far, the best DAX intro I've seen online.
